Does your company adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)?
Yes — our company adheres to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), which are recommendations from regulatory bodies to ensure that products are compliant with quality, health, and safety standards. For instance, all our staff wear protective gear to protect the products from extraneous matter. We ensure all ingredients and in-process products are stored in closed bags and containers and rotated on the "First In First Out" basis among other measures that are in place.
Are the products lactose-free?
Most North Coast Naturals products do not contain lactose. However, our facility does carefully handle lactose in the form of whey and casein to produce other products. Unlike gluten, where anything above 20 ppm can be problematic, the same doesn't hold true for lactose. Based on the evidence available, someone that is very lactose intolerant can still consume up to 1 gram per day. Most individuals with mild lactose intolerance can have up to 12 g a day (equal to approximately 1 cup of milk). With this in mind, our vegan proteins would be fine to consumers even if someone had significant lactose intolerance.
Regarding the Immune Whey: if your stomach can handle 1/20th to 1/10th of a glass of milk, then your stomach can likely tolerate a scoop of a typical whey protein isolate. No whey protein isolate is absolutely 100.0% lactose-free, but many people who are lactose intolerant to a glass of milk can handle whey isolate.
Are the products soy-free?
Our products are carefully labeled with each ingredient that is part of the formula. If the label does not list soy as an ingredient, then there is no soy in the formula.
Do your products contain casein?
North Coast Naturals products do not contain casein.
Does your facility handle fish?
The only fish product we handle is a marine-derived collagen powder.
What are the sources of your enzymes?
All our enzymes do not contain animal-derived ingredients and are from plant-based sources.
Are the products organic?
The vast majority of our products are made from raw whole-foods and non-GMO options, many of which are organic. Currently we are not organic-certified but we are looking to obtain the certification soon.
I am pregnant — is it safe to take supplements?
Some of our products can be beneficial for pregnant women. Our Ultimate Daily Cleanse is a good example — a natural fibre blend that promotes daily regularity (a common challenge for pregnant women) and therefore safe for consumption. Plant or whey proteins are also examples of products that are safe and beneficial to support new protein needs.
Some other products such as Daily Greens and MCT Oil are not encouraged. Daily Greens has superfruits & super-potent veggies without herbal extracts which makes this product acceptable for pregnant women. However, keep in mind that at the first trimester of the pregnancy the fetus is very vulnerable to substances. Some studies also suggest that consuming MCT oil can affect birth weight and milk composition unfavourably. Babies may not put on as much weight and their milk essential fatty acids composition is altered.
That being said, supplements can only be taken during pregnancy if recommended by a healthcare practitioner. Please play safe and talk to your doctor to evaluate your specific case before consuming any product.
Are the products safe for children?
Typically, products that are "foods" such as most protein shake mixes, and that are not sold as a "Dietary Supplement", are GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for use as food products. Items that are sold as "Dietary Supplements" and not as foods are largely for adult use only. Check the label of the product you have questions about, as each product is unique.
How is the MCT Oil extracted?
A process called fractionation is used to extract the C8 and C10s from the coconut oil.
What is the source of your BCAA?
Our BCAA is 100% plant-based, derived from fermented root vegetables.
Can pure MCT Oil cause an upset stomach or GI discomfort?
At times for some people, yes. A good MCT Oil is a pure source of C8 and C10 fats, whereas normal coconut oil is only about 16% C8 and C10 fats (the medium-chain fats). For many first-time users of MCT oil, it is the first time the stomach has taken on such a pure source of these MCTs and as such, it can take a while for some people's stomach to get used to MCT oil. To assess individual tolerance, start with 1/3 serving (1 teaspoon / 5 ml) with food. Then escalate the usage to a point where you are comfortable.
Not everybody's stomach can tolerate every food, and MCT Oil is no different. Some people may experience gastrointestinal upset. That can range from just a small discomfort, all the way to difficult bowel movements for some first-time users. In general: start small (e.g. 5 ml) of MCT oil; use with food. Incidentally, that is also how we use it in some of our protein powders — at a low usage level per scoop — and none of those consumers have reported any MCT oil discomfort.
Are your products Halal certified?
Many of the ingredients we use are Halal, but we have not undertaken to have our facility certified Halal yet.
Are your products tested for heavy metals?
Please rest assured that the limits for heavy metals are closely monitored and controlled in our facility according to the Health Canada NHP (Natural Health Product) limits for heavy metals, as well as other government agencies in other countries (e.g. Germany). We have an internal limit that no ingredient is accepted that contains >10 ppm of total heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic). In addition, our Quality Assurance department regularly tests ingredients and finished products to verify that we meet our internal limits (<10 ppm).
Do any of your products contain pork?
No — we don't carry or use any pork-based products in our facility.
Are your products keto-friendly?
A ketogenic diet is defined as high fat, moderate protein and very low carb. To go into ketosis you need to limit your carbs to between 25–50 g of net carbs per day. Not everyone can get into ketosis having 50 g of carbs a day, so some experts suggest keeping carbs to no more than 25–30 g/day. That being said, every single North Coast Naturals product is keto-friendly. Please check it out:
Ultimate Daily Greens
4 g total carbs – 1 g fibre = 3 g net carbs
The 2 g of protein also balances blood sugar.
Ultimate Daily Cleanse
Although it has 16 g of carbs, 14 of them are fibre. Fibre isn't absorbed nor does it spike blood sugar. To the contrary, it stabilizes blood sugar (soluble fibre in particular) and delays gastric emptying — both good for those on a ketogenic diet. The 6.5 g of essential fats + 1.5 g of monounsaturates are also an added plus for a diet that should be high in fat.
16 g total carbs – 14 g fibre = 2 g net carbs.
BCAA / Glutamine
Amino acids are free of carbs unless they're sweetened with sugar — which ours are not. Our BCAA and Glutamine are sweetened with debittered stevia, a natural ingredient that does not impact blood sugar levels.
Hemp Seed Hearts
3 g total carbs – 2 g fibre = 1 g net carbs
The 10 g of protein also balances blood sugar.
13 g of total fat (10 g are EFAs) is also very desirable on a keto diet.
Iso Protein-100
2 g total carbs – 1 g fibre = 1 g net carbs (the unflavoured doesn't have 1 g of carbs like the chocolate and vanilla, so it has a net carb value of 2 g).
Brown Rice Protein
1 g total carbs – 0.5 g fibre = 0.5 g net carbs.
Vege Pro-7
6 g total carbs – 4 g fibre = 2 g net carbs (Chocolate)
5 g total carbs – 3 g fibre = 2 g net carbs (Vanilla)
Pumpkin Protein
2.5 g total carbs – 2.5 g fibre = 0 g net carbs
Pumpkin seeds have been shown to reduce blood sugar largely as a result of the high magnesium content.
Hemp Protein
8 g total carbs – 8 g fibre = 0 g net carbs
3 g of total fat is desirable on a keto diet.
Is the whey protein denatured?
No. Whey filtration is a physical process — not a chemical one — and is regarded as a no-added-heat process. The heat during filtration would be well below that required to denature the protein in whey.
Where do your ingredients come from?
We have over 500 ingredients in our facility which come from over 20 countries. To ensure food safety, we do not just rely on trusting one country over another — we rely on Quality Control safety tests. The main test is to verify the product is safe for human consumption, which involves testing for mold, yeast, salmonella, E-coli and bacteria. Next our specification involves testing for heavy metals (e.g. lead, mercury, cadmium). These two sets of tests validate food safety regardless of where an ingredient comes from.
We also go an extra step further for dairy ingredients like whey protein. We are one of the few dietary supplement facilities in the world that performs additional tests on whey protein for the pathogenic bacteria listeria — a particularly nasty bacteria. This is all part of our export food safety process. Our products can also undergo other tests as well (e.g. Informed Choice drug test, Ingredient Identity, Ingredient Potency, True Bound Protein, and more).
Are your products gluten-free?
The majority of our products do not contain gluten in the formulation, however our facility handles cookies in the making of some other protein powders. Consumers with celiac disease want 0 gluten — therefore our labels do not mention that the products are gluten-free. If you have a mild intolerance to gluten, our products should be fine to use. Please consult with a healthcare practitioner to evaluate your specific restrictions.
Do your products contain nuts?
Canada: No, and we do not have any nuts in our facility.
USA: The US FDA considers coconut to be a "tree nut". But the only coconut ingredient in our facility is MCT oil from coconuts. Being that MCT oil typically has zero protein (protein is the allergenic portion), the FDA's further position is then that the oil would not generally be considered as being a source of tree-nut allergen — so in essence, the MCT oil in any of our products would not generally be considered an allergen. If you have any concerns, always consult with your doctor before using any supplement.
What types of fish are used in the Marine Collagen?
Our Marine Collagen sources are from deep-sea cold-water fishes such as cod, pollock and haddock.
How much caffeine is there in Immune Whey?
The caffeine content is very low: less than 2 mg per serving. A cup of coffee has between 70–140 mg of caffeine.
What is debittered stevia?
Our stevia is debittered because we use Rebaudioside A (aka Reb A), which is the least bitter of the compounds found in stevia. The compounds in stevia that provide the sweetness are called steviol glycosides — Reb A is sweeter than sugar but the least bitter of the steviol glycosides.
